Font replacement has become more prominent in the last few years, from techniques using Flash, image replacement, JavaScript and more recently HTML 5 canvas techniques there are a load of options available to web developers. I have recently been tinkering with @font-face, and all in all it seems very good. The main factor I believe this hasn't been adopted more widely is due to Font licensing.
